AP US Government (APUG)

  • Welcome to AP U.S. Government! APUG is a challenging course that is designed to be the equivalent of a freshman college course in a high school setting. It is a two-semester survey of American government from its founding to the present. To succeed in this class, students will need solid reading and writing skills along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and study.

We will emphasize analytic thinking skills, argumentative essay writing, and interpretation of original source documents and scholarly research. The good news is that the historical thinking skills students will learn are highly transferable to many other academic and practical disciplines, and they will serve you well in your college, career, and civic life.

One thing I want to emphasize is how challenging this class can be. Although it may not be as challenging as APUSH, it is still a college-level class that can be difficult. If you (the student) are taking any other AP classes this year, please talk to me so we can discuss the amount of work that you will be facing this year. This class is detail orientated and the amount of information that you need to know is extensive. With 51 minute classes, it highly unlikely that ALL of the information will be covered. As such, you will be doing a lot of outside studying to know and understand everything that the AP program and dual-credit ask/assume that you know.
