Course Description: Welcome to English IV, an eighteen-week, twelfth-grade course. English IV curriculum builds onthe reading and writing skills developed in English III. It focuses on British literature andcomposition. Students will complete assignmentsin reading, writing, and oral presentation designed to enhance comprehensionand skills in logic and critical thinking. Students will research, draft, develop, and revise various compositions.This course meets high school graduation requirements for English and is designed for the grade-level student who plans either to enter the work force,enter a junior college, or attend a four-year college or university.
The most important element in English curriculum is the writing element. During the eighteen weeks, every student must complete the following writing assignments:
A. Informational Essay
B. Persuasive Research Essay
C. Descriptive, concept, or reflective essay
D. Six minor writing assignments, including a well-developed poem, analytic responses to literature, and a shorter descriptive, concept, or reflective essay
* Failure to complete these writing assignments could result in failure of the class.
The literature we read in the class is British literature throughout the centuries. In addition to stories, nonfiction, and poetry, we will read three major works:
A. The epic poem Beowulf
B. Shakespeare’s MacBeth
C. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Course Materials: The texts used are The Lord of theFlies and MacBeth which the students will check out from the school library.
